What to Verify Before Every ITR Filing Deadline

August 10, 2026 Soma Sharma No comments yet
What to Verify Before Every ITR Filing Deadline

This year’s ITR season doesn’t have one deadline. It has four, spread across five months, each tied to a different category of filer. For CAs, DSAs, and lenders who handle returns in bulk rather than filing their own, that spread changes how verification needs to work. Precisa sits in the middle of this shift, since a growing share of the ITR data our clients process gets used for credit decisions and compliance checks, not just tax filing.

This article is a working checklist: what to verify in the return, what to cross-check against bank and GST data, and what’s changed for AY 2026-27.

Key Takeaways

  • ITR-1 and ITR-2 were due 31 July 2026. ITR-3 and ITR-4 (non-audit) now run to 31 August, a permanent change from this assessment year onward.
  • Before relying on any ITR, confirm the form matches the filer’s actual income sources, not just their profession on paper.
  • Income declared should reconcile with Form 26AS, the AIS, and bank credits for the same period. Gaps here are the most common cause of rejected loans and revised returns.
  • E-verification has to happen within 30 days of filing. An unverified return counts as not filed, regardless of the upload timestamp.
  • Lenders and CAs processing volume around deadline weeks benefit most from automating reconciliation, since manual cross-checking is where errors slip through under time pressure.

Why This ITR Season Has More Than One Deadline to Track

The staggered structure is new to this assessment year. Salaried filers using ITR-1 or ITR-2 had until 31 July 2026. Freelancers, professionals, and small businesses filing ITR-3 or ITR-4 without an audit requirement now have until 31 August, a change under the Finance Act, 2026 that applies every year going forward, not just this one. Audit cases run to 31 October, with the audit report itself due by 30 September. Miss all of those, and a belated return is still possible until 31 December, with late fees under Section 234F and a narrower set of options.

For anyone reviewing returns rather than filing their own, this matters because a return that looks “late” against the old July 31 marker might be perfectly on time under the new calendar. Knowing which deadline applies to which filer is the first check, before any of the substantive verification below.

What to Verify in the Return Itself Before You File or Rely on It

Three checks catch most of the problems that surface later, whether that’s a notice from the department or a loan file that unravels during underwriting.

Match the ITR form to the actual income profile

A filer with presumptive business income under Section 44AD who’s mistakenly filed ITR-1 has filed an invalid return, even if every number in it is accurate. This happens more often than you’d expect with gig workers and small traders who assume ITR-1 covers everyone. Check the income heads first, then confirm the form against Precisa’s ITR analysis tool, which flags form-mismatch risk automatically

Reconcile against Form 26AS and the AIS

TDS credits claimed need to match what’s reflected in Form 26AS. The Annual Information Statement goes further, capturing interest income, dividend income, and high-value transactions the filer might not have declared. A mismatch here is the single biggest trigger for department scrutiny, and for a lender, a signal worth checking against a credit bureau report before the income figure behind an underwriting decision gets relied on

Confirm e-verification happened, and within the window

What to Verify Before Every ITR Filing Deadline

Filing isn’t complete until the return is e-verified through Aadhaar OTP, net banking, a bank account EVC, or a physical ITR-V sent to the CPC in Bengaluru. That has to happen within 30 days of filing. An ITR that was submitted on time but never verified is treated as though it was never filed, which is a detail that trips up filers and reviewers alike when they’re working off the submission date alone.

What to Cross-Check Against Bank Statements and GST Filings

The return by itself only tells half the story. For CAs preparing filings and for lenders assessing a borrower, the numbers need to hold up against independent data.

Income declared in the ITR should broadly track with credits in the corresponding bank account for that period. A self-employed filer showing modest declared income alongside large, frequent bank credits is a pattern worth investigating before the return goes final. It’s worth catching even earlier if a loan is being approved on the strength of that income figure, especially once it’s weighed against a credit report pulled for the same applicant. Precisa’s bank statement analysis tool flags exactly this kind of gap automatically, which matters when you’re reviewing dozens of files in the same week rather than one at a time.

The same logic applies to GST turnover. A business filing ITR-4 under presumptive taxation should show turnover figures that align with its GSTR filings for the same financial year. Where the two diverge, it’s usually a classification error or something worth a closer look. Our GSTR analysis tool runs this reconciliation against bank data directly, and the ITR verification tool cross-references income claims against transaction history in the same pass.

How to Avoid the Last-Week Bottleneck

Most errors that surface in the final days before a deadline aren’t new mistakes. They’re old mismatches finally noticed because someone was reviewing the file under pressure. A Bengaluru DSA using Precisa cut loan processing time from two hours to thirty minutes per application by moving this kind of reconciliation earlier and automating it, rather than doing it manually once a file was already flagged. Some of that speed comes from pulling verified data straight from Account Aggregator consent flows instead of chasing PDF statements from the applicant.

The practical fix is running reconciliation checks well before the relevant deadline, not during the final week when volume peaks and review time shrinks. For CAs managing a client book with staggered deadlines, that means starting ITR-3 and ITR-4 reviews as soon as the July 31 batch clears. For lenders, it means building the cross-check into the underwriting workflow rather than treating it as a manual step someone gets to when time allows.

None of this replaces judgment. Automated cross-analysis flags mismatches; deciding what to do with a flagged file still needs someone who understands the borrower or client relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the ITR filing deadline for AY 2026-27?

It depends on the ITR form. ITR-1 and ITR-2 were due 31 July 2026. ITR-3 and ITR-4 without an audit requirement are due 31 August 2026. Audit cases run to 31 October 2026, with the audit report due 30 September 2026.

2. Is the ITR-3 and ITR-4 deadline extension to August 31 a one-time change?

No. It’s a permanent change introduced under the Finance Act, 2026, and applies to non-audit ITR-3 and ITR-4 filers every assessment year going forward, not just AY 2026-27.

3. What happens if someone misses their applicable ITR deadline?

A belated return can still be filed under Section 139(4) until 31 December 2026, along with a late fee under Section 234F and interest on any outstanding tax. Certain benefits, like carrying forward specific losses, are lost once the original deadline passes.

4. How long does a filer have to e-verify their ITR after submission?

Thirty days from the date of filing. If verification doesn’t happen within that window, the return is treated as though it was never filed, regardless of when it was submitted.

5. Can a lender rely on ITR data alone without checking it against bank or GST records?

It’s risky to. The return reflects what the filer declared, not necessarily what their transaction history shows. Cross-checking against bank credits and GST turnover catches gaps that the ITR figures alone won’t reveal.

The Bottom Line

The old habit of treating 31 July as the only date that matters doesn’t work anymore. Verification needs to happen against the deadline that applies to the filer in front of you, and it needs to go beyond the return itself into the bank and GST data that supports or contradicts it. Building that check in early, rather than scrambling for it in the final week, is what separates a clean filing season from a stressful one.

If you’re processing ITR, GST, and bank data across multiple clients each month, it’s worth seeing how the cross-analysis works before your next deadline crunch. Try Precisa for free.

Why Lenders Often Overlook the Inquiry Success Ratio in Credit Bureau Reports

September 9, 2026 Soma Sharma No comments yet

Most credit teams open a bureau report and go straight to the score, then to DPD and then to NPA status, if there is one. Precisa’s credit bureau report analysis is built to catch what gets skipped in that sequence: the enquiry section, which gets a glance at best, usually reduced to a single number, […]

Credit Risk Assessment Software: What It Should Do Beyond Rating a Borrower’s Risk

August 24, 2026 Soma Sharma No comments yet

A three-digit score tells you a borrower is risky. It doesn’t tell you why, and for a credit team processing volume, that gap is where bad loans slip through. Most credit risk assessment software can generate a score in seconds. Fewer can explain the number, catch a borrower who’s engineered their way around it, or […]
